The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, did not confirm he would live there promptly after his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will always live within me and my work," he affirmed.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
