The megacity Awakens to Toxic Pollution Post Celebrations

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" category.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the city registered an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the healthy limit recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Changes

Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that covers the capital as winter sets in.

Yet recently, the current local leadership approached the judicial authority to seek a modification of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".

Court Ruling and Enforcement

To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, the court approved the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific periods throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi registered pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst levels seen during the festival in at least three years.

Regional Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on contaminants originating in across the border following the events.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the city have remained as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Near celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to seventy percent above the peak readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The problem in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

Public Health and Financial Toll

The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple studies.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely fatalities per year in Delhi.
