The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
