New York Introduces Online Platform for Residents to Submit ICE Videos Following Detentions of Four US Citizens
New York state attorney general has launched a new reporting form encouraging locals to submit photos and videos of immigration raids across New York. This move follows a day after a significant immigration operation disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering mass demonstrations.
American Citizens Detained During Raid
A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and held for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies broke out in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen is entitled to live without fear," the attorney general declared in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement during the raid, I ask you to share that evidence with us. We are dedicated to examining these accounts and investigating any legal breaches."
Portal Features
The platform provides options to submit images and video footage of the operation, plus a field to specify geographic details. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "the office might employ any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Details of the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say involved dozens of ICE personnel, took place in a well-known area of Manhattan where fake purses, items, goods and merchandise are regularly available en masse – typically to tourists.
Recordings of the operation depict numerous masked and armed federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and pushing back onlookers. Crowds of residents followed the officers through the streets. An armored military vehicle was noticed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
In a Wednesday press conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four nationals were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be detained for no reason." He said the persons were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman said. "This represents a armed campaign to incite tension. It is merely a justification to generate turmoil for federal officials to bring in the armed forces to prevent unrest that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the ICE raid quickly spread – all three NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the raid, as did the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the current administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, instead of protection. It has to end," one mayoral candidate stated.
The city's immigrant rights groups voiced concern also.
"ICE targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to target small merchants working to survive. This action had nothing to do with citizen protection and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," remarked the president of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the bureau has stated it does not apprehend citizens. However, external research has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been becoming more common in New York and nationwide this year.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the present government. Rallies against ICE are widespread including allegations of force and abusive practices.
Recently, a submission provided by legal entities stated inadequate care of women with child in detention centers.
