New Year Revelers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK
Weather experts are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Plans Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's postponement. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, making extra layers essential, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
Moving into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- The public have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.
The Mercury Forecast to Drop Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Warnings Released
At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this signified the weather could to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
