Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
