Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

An new initialism came to light a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to doctors including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a child who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials has denied these accusations, just as it refutes everything it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
