Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded UK Equipment to Find Local Nationals That Served With Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told

An informant has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK left behind confidential devices enabling the militant group to locate Afghans that had served with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, explained that people concerned by the data leak were advised to move homes and switch their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.

MPs are investigating the Conservative government's management of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data concerning approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

Data Disclosure Happened

A spreadsheet containing their personal data, such as identities, addresses and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at British military command in last year.

The incident was discovered only in August 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had requested to settle in the UK surfaced on Facebook.

Regime's Resources

“There seems to be this misconception that the Taliban lack similar capabilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have a contact number, they are able to track you down to within metres. That's precisely what the unit did.”

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban possessed advanced decryption, Person A confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Early investigations provided to the committee suggested that at least 49 family members and associates of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A gag order concerning the leak was implemented in late 2023 and blocked any information regarding the matter from public disclosure until recently.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the aid group associated with told affected households they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.

“We advised that they relocate when possible and altered their phone numbers. That constituted the primary information that, should militant forces obtained such data, would cause their location being found,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The source disputed that an official review performed by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing abuse endured by affected individuals, including electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to force the family to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
