Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.

The Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Ladd passed away 89 years old.

This star, with filmography spanned Chinatown, died at her home in Ojai, California. The news was revealed in a statement from her child, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.

Her daughter, who appeared with her mom in several movies like Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero as well as my profound gift as a mother”, stating that she was at her bedside during her final moments.

“She was the most wonderful grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist and compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she expressed. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Beginnings and Major Success

The start of her career featured small roles in TV shows including Gunsmoke whereas that decade saw her starring with actor Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she shared the screen alongside Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film the movie Black Widow and humorous film National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and appeared on the show Alice, a television series derived from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she received another supporting actress nomination for her performance in Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her biological child the character played by Dern. The nineties also saw roles in comedy Cemetery Club, a film bringing her back with Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed Laura Dern’s mom again. Those years also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for performances in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Working with Laura Dern

She continued to star with Laura Dern in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s Inland Empire and White’s satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
